Claims Representative Job Description
- Claims representatives work in each of our 1,300 field offices and international offices of operations.
- A claims representative assists the public in person, by mail and by phone in order to establish entitlement to Social Security benefits. Duties include:
- Conducting interviews with individuals to establish eligibility for Social Security Retirement, Disability, Survivors and/or Supplemental Security Income benefits
- Providing information to a diverse public, including individuals of varying socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Determining eligibility for payment
- Processing claims and authorizing payment
- Assisting individuals with filing administrative appeals
- Obtaining, clarifying and verifying data used to make benefit entitlement decisions.
- Identifying and investigating potential program abuse
- Referring individuals to appropriate private, nonprofit or government organizations for assistance
- Maintaining a knowledge base of current Social Security policy and regulations
- Using state-of-the art technology to access and update information about claims.
- To qualify, a person must demonstrate the ability to:
- Meet and deal with the public in person, by mail and by phone
- Organize and express thoughts in a clear manner
- Absorb and explain complex technical information to the general public
- Analyze problems
- Utilize language for different levels of understanding
- Recognize solutions
- Communicate unfavorable information
- Plan and organize work
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing-including the ability to overcome attitudes or emotions that hinder effective communication
- The length of training is 6 months.
- Potential career advancement to technical expert or supervisory management positions
- One year probationary period
- Salary: GS-5 or GS-7 - Based on Qualifications (Salary will reflect the locality pay available in your part of the country)
- Promotion Potential: GS-11
